Sean Lee has been eyeing a state title for the past three years.
His freshman year, the Trabuco Hills high jumper finished second at state despite an injury.
His sophomore year, he took third in the competition.
Junior year — this past season — the 6-foot-7 jumper finally broke through, taking the state crown by clearing 6 feet, 11 inches.
“Everything finally came together,” Lee said. “It was about peaking at the right time.”
As happy as Lee was to claim the championship, he was disappointed that he didn’t best his personal records or achieve 7 feet during the season. He wasn’t able to train like he’s accustomed to, since Trabuco Hills didn’t have a track from November through February (a new track was being built).
The inner critic inside of him has driven him to win the CIF-Southern Section Division I championship three straight years— the only California high-jumper to accomplish the feat of winning three consecutive section titles.
There has only been one other California track and field athlete that has placed in the top three in three consecutive state meets, and that athlete competed from 1933 to ’35, according to Trabuco Hills head coach JT Ayers.
“Sean could go down as one of the greatest jumpers ever,” Ayers said. “His biggest competition is always himself.”

Congratulations to Sean Lee who is the California State Champion in High Jump from this past weekend's CIF State Championships in Clovis, CA.
Sean is only one of two athletes ever to finish top 3 in his first 3 years of high school - the other athlete who shares this honor competed in 1935. Sean Placed 2nd as a freshman, 3rd as a Sophomore, and is the State Champion this year. We are so proud of Sean!
As a result and team scoring, Trabuco boys placed 14th in California and beat every Orange County Team.
